NT SHELTER - WHO WE ARE

NT Shelter is the peak non-government housing body working towards a just and fairer housing system in the NT. We aim to ensure appropriate and affordable housing is available for everyone, especially disadvantaged groups and those on low incomes.

NT Shelter is incorporated under the NT Associations Act and was formally established as the peak non-government housing advocacy body for the NT in 1996. NT Shelter is accountable to its members and other stakeholders through an elected Board of Management made up of community representatives from each region of the NT.

OUR VISION
Appropriate and Affordable housing for ALL Territorians

OUR FUNDING
The organisation was first established as 'Shelter Darwin' in May 1992 and 'Shelter Alice Springs' also existed around that time. The Territory wide focus came with the registration of a change of name to Northern Territory Shelter Inc effective 18 June 1996. Having previously only recieved one-off project funds, since 2002/03 NT Shelter is has been funded as a peak body by the NT Government. The Dept of Housing, Local Government and Regional Services now funds us for;

  • a full time Executive Officer position
  • a 0.5 Admin Support Officer position
  • a 0.5 Central Australian Policy Officer position

The NT Dept of Health and Families (Family and Children's Services) has funded the following position for 12 months commencing May 2010;

  • a 0.5 Homelessness Policy Officer position

OUR BUSINESS PLAN

NT Shelter's current Business Plan was endorsed by the Board of Management in February 2010 and build on our previous 2007/09 plan.

NT Shelter's 2010/11 Policy Platform is currently available. Any comment on our policies are welcome and may be directed to eo@ntshelter.org.au at anytime.

The Policy Platform was endorsed at the November meeting of the NT Shelter Board of Management.

GOVERNANCE


NT Shelter is an independant non-government association incorporated under the 2005 NT Associations Act.

Our Board of Management is elected annually by the membership to manage the affairs of the organisation within the framework of the Act, the constitution, our Business Plan and our internal Policies and Procedures as endorsed by the Board. Current Board Members are;
