THE Territory has the longest public housing turnover rate of any jurisdiction, with houses on average sitting vacant for three months.

This is despite the NT having strong demand for housing, with the highest rates of homelessness in the country.

According to the latest Productivity Commission housing report, over the last three years the number of pubic housing properties available has dropped to its lowest in a decade – 60 properties below the 10 year average.

The Productivity Commission’s report into public housing indicates at the end of the 2019 financial year the turnaround was 122 days.

The figure, however, has improved, with a Local Government, Housing and Community Development Department spokeswoman revealing the wait time had decreased to 99 days. “While the average turnaround time across urban public housing in the Northern Territory was 99 days (as at 31 December 2019), turnaround times can vary and depend on the condition of the property that becomes unoccupied and the repairs and maintenance that might be required,” the spokeswoman said.

The spokeswoman said prospective tenants not showing up to meetings had also affected the time a house was left unoccupied.

She said part of the drop in housing could be put down to the allocation of houses to be run by community organisations.

NT Shelter executive officer Peter McMillan said more needed to be done to decrease the time a house was left unoccupied.

“The NT needs to lift its game in times of making available vacant stock,” he said.
