The COVID-19 pandemic presents many challenges for all Australians, particularly those who are homeless or without access to stable accommodation. In the Northern Territory, substantial efforts have been made to assist people to return to country and this has significantly reduced the number of people sleeping rough in major regional centres. It is important that plans are finalised for situations where people, for whom return to country is not applicable, remain without a roof over their head.
NT Shelter has identified a number of situations where people may be at risk of entering into homelessness during the pandemic. We have brought these to the attention of the NT Government with a view to minimising these instances.
We are aware that the NT Government is working through a range of responses. We continue to work closely and constructively with government through these issues. However, as these responses are government led and circumstances are changing rapidly, NT Shelter is not in a position to comment publicly on the status of specific responses under consideration.
