“It’s absolutely essential tenants are protected from evictions.”
“There is no reason why the Territory should be any different in terms of the protections it provides its tenants.”
- NT Shelter’s Executive Officer Peter McMillan spoke to Nine News prior to the introduction to Parliament of the Northern Territory Government’s Tenancies Legislation Amendment Bill on Friday April 24th 2020.
22 April 2020: NT Shelter, Northern Territory Council of Social Service and Darwin Community Legal Service have written to Chief Minister Michael Gunner to urge the NT government to step up to the plate by tabling legislation during Parliament this Friday that ends the uncertainty and anxiety for renters in the Northern Territory who have lost their job or have lost significant income and are in serious rental stress.
The Open Letter can be accessed here.
We have also written to all NT Members of Parliament urging them to support this legislation, to protect the 50% of Territorians who rent from housing insecurity, eviction and homelessness during the COVID-19 pandemic. This letter is available here.
