NT Election 2024

With voting now open and less than a week to go to the Northern Territory Election, we are taking this opportunity to bring you up-to-speed with NT Shelter’s election advocacy. A reminder that our full Policy Platform, candidate and party responses and a roundup of related media, can be found on our election webpage.

NT Shelter Election Asks – in brief:

  • Develop an urban housing supply plan for the Northern Territory.
  • Mandate that 30% of all land released by the Crown for residential use be for social and affordable housing.
  • Complete the third tranche of reviews of the Northern Territory Residential Tenancies Act.
  • Safeguard and restore funding for homelessness services.
  • Give TFHC full accountability for the specification, construction and delivery of public housing, and ultimate responsibility for repairs and maintenance.

In The Regions:

  • Establish short-stay accommodation in Katherine.
  • Establish transitional housing for women and children escaping domestic family violence in Tennant Creek.
  • Establish a Youth Foyer in Alice Springs.

Party and Candidate Responses to-date:
In June, NT Shelter submitted our Policy Platform to all candidates and parties running in the election. To-date, these are the responses we have received:

We welcome the commitment by Territory Labor to establish Territory Homes if re-elected. This new department will hold responsibility for all aspects related to building more housing, including the management of social housing. More information here.
