NT Shelter is a peak body and advocacy organisation and does not provide accommodation services.
The Housing Strategy for the Northern Territory is currently open for consultation, providing an important opportunity to shape the future of housing across the Territory. Through consultation with community, industry and stakeholders, it is NT Shelter’s hope that the Strategy will aim to deliver a coordinated, long-term approach to improving access to safe, appropriate and affordable housing for all Territorians.
NT Shelter is actively engaging in the Strategy’s development, advocating for evidence-based solutions and encouraging our members and stakeholders to participate in the consultation process and share their insights to help inform the Strategy.
Independent estimates indicate that the Northern Territory’s shortfall of social and affordable housing is projected to reach 14,500 dwellings by 2036. Severe overcrowding accounts for 76% of homelessness in the NT (including 65% in urban centres). Insufficient supply continues to place significant pressure on the system, this is reflected in an urban public housing waitlist of more than 5,000 applicants, with wait times ranging from four to ten years.
These challenges highlight the urgent need for a coordinated, long-term response.
Informed by these realities and the experiences of our members and the broader sector, NT Shelter has developed a set of key priorities to help shape the Northern Territory Housing Strategy. Our priorities outline practical, evidence-based solutions to improve access to safe, appropriate and affordable housing across the Territory.

The Northern Territory Government has opened public consultation on the NT Housing Strategy via the Have Your Say NT website.
This consultation will provide an opportunity for members, stakeholders and the broader community to contribute their perspectives and help shape the future of housing in the Territory.
NT Shelter encourages all stakeholders to take part in the consultation process and have their say. We also welcome members to reach out to NT Shelter if they would like to discuss the consultation or seek support in preparing their submission.
